Chargebacks are on track to hit a staggering 334 million transactions in 2028. But many of those could be easily avoided — nearly half of consumers have disputed a charge they later realized was legitimate.
We partnered with Datos Insights to discover what’s driving the surge in chargebacks. Here are the top findings from our survey of 3,500 consumers:
- Transaction confusion is a serious challenge, with 44% of consumers struggling to recognize their own purchases.
- This confusion translates into unnecessary — and expensive — chargebacks. When seeing unfamiliar transactions, over half of consumers say it was fraud.
- The good news: Issuers and merchants have an opportunity to improve the purchase experience and reduce disputes altogether.
