Mastercard’s latest white paper, “Unlocking the value of debit loyalty,” reveals how a subset of consumers called Debit Devotees — young, tech-savvy consumers who rely on debit as their primary payment method — represents a powerful opportunity for issuers to build lasting connections. 

The research highlights several key themes shaping this opportunity:

  • A high-potential audience: There are 98 million Debit Devotees in the U.S., who are ambitious, digitally forward and deeply loyal. About 76% say they are loyal to their debit provider.
  • Expanding horizons: Nearly three-quarters would turn to their debit issuer first for new products. Credit cards, financial education and tools for managing spending are top priorities.
  • Digital-first mindset: About 65% feel confident using new technology, and many embrace digital wallets, payment apps and open banking. They want convenience, personalization and cybersecurity.
  • Everyday engagement: Debit Devotees use their cards across a wide range of categories, from groceries and bills to subscriptions and travel, 17% more often than the average U.S. debit user.
  • Opportunities for issuers: By offering digital-first experiences, rewards  and financial guidance, issuers can strengthen loyalty and cross-sell products like credit, loans and savings tools.
  • Tailored strategies: Persona-level insights reveal unique needs and preferences, enabling issuers to design relevant products and messaging.

These insights underscore the importance of meeting Debit Devotees where they are today and guiding them toward a future of financial growth. Issuers who invest in this segment now can unlock long-term value and become trusted partners in their customers’ financial journeys.
