Mastercard and Donkey Republic partners to enable more sustainable and seamless bike rentals in Copenhagen

November 15, 2024 | Copenhagen, Denmark
Through the partnership Donkey Republic and Mastercard will bring frictionless payments to Copenhagen, allowing citizens and tourists to rent a bike with just a simple tap with their Mastercard. The modernization and opening of the mobility landscape brings Copenhagen up to speed with cities across the globe, where frictionless mobility plays an important role in enabling travelers to travel seamlessly in a more sustainable way across all modes of transport.

Today, Donkey Republic and Mastercard announced the launch of a new way to pay for renting bicycles in the city of Copenhagen.

Currently most users rely on apps for bike rentals, which is a solution that will continue to exist. With the partnership, an additional payment option is added for bike riders, who will be able to simply tap their Mastercard and go. By providing a seamless and accessible rider experience, our Urban Mobility solutions are making the more sustainable transit choice an easier, more desirable choice for riders.

“We are proud to enable Danish citizens and tourists to travel in a less carbon intensive, more sustainable way, by simply tapping their Mastercard and ride the bikes without friction,” says Erik Gutwasser, President Northern Europe at Mastercard.

“By partnering with Mastercard we offer an easy way to access our bikes. This supports our mission to create a better world by making sustainable mobility available to everyone in a seamless way,” says Niels Henrik Rasmussen, CEO at Donkey Republic.

As part of the partnership, Mastercard and Donkey Republic will plant a tree every time a bike rider taps a Mastercard card on a Donkey Republic bike, targeting to restore 25,000 trees in support of Priceless Planet Coalition. The donation highlights the environmental impact people can make by choosing a bike as their mode of transport, as an open payment landscape aligns well with enabling travelers to reduce their carbon footprint.

The modernization and opening of the mobility landscape ensures Copenhagen is up to speed with the Mastercard future of mobility trends where all modes of transport — trains, buses, cars, and bikes – are connected via the same seamless payment systems as retail payments.
