Mastercard will require that all newly manufactured plastic cards be constructed of sustainable materials including, but not limited to, recycled polyvinyl chloride (RPVC), recycled polyethylene terephthalate (RPET), or polylactic acid (PLA).​

Issuers need to qualify vendor card products through the Mastercard sustainable card program, also known as the Mastercard Card Eco Certification (CEC) scheme.
