Empowering Ukraine’s digital economy
April 7, 2025 | By Inga Andreieva
Reflecting on the past three years since the start of the full-scale invasion in Ukraine, it’s clear that businesses working in the country, including ours, have been forced to rethink how they operate, navigating these unprecedented challenges. The ability to stay resilient, while rapidly responding and adjusting strategies has become essential.
The pandemic initially tested the agility of businesses, pushing them to further embrace digital transformation and optimize remote working which proved invaluable from the very start of the invasion. Yet, the onset of the war presented entirely new and profound challenges. Ensuring the safety and well-being of our team was and still is our highest priority, while our commitment to maintaining cashless payments and financial services reinforced our collective sense of purpose, fueling our determination to support Ukraine’s economic resilience and continue innovating even in these difficult times.
This has translated into tangible initiatives that have proved vital for Ukraine's economy and its people. For example, our "Purchase with Cash Withdrawal" solution, significantly expanded during the early months of the invasion, provided much-needed access to cash at retail outlets, easing strain on banks. Collaborating with Ukrainian Railways, we also launched a mobile application that made ticketing easier for millions of Ukrainians and inclusive for visually impaired users.
Our work in collaboration with government bodies, including the Ministry of Digital Transformation and the Ministry of Economy of Ukraine, emphasizes our role beyond just payments. Supporting the Diia.Business online portal and offline consultancy centers across Ukraine and abroad, as well as initiatives like the National Cashback Program, offering Ukrainians cashback on cashless purchases of Ukrainian-made goods, where Mastercard serves as a technology partner, illustrate our deep commitment to empowering SMEs and supporting Ukrainian manufacturers.
Looking ahead, embracing flexibility in planning and execution remains crucial. The rapid shift toward digital payments, driven by technologies like tokenization and open banking, underscores the growing importance of robust cybersecurity and inclusive financial solutions.
At Mastercard, we continue to adapt and innovate, driven by the belief that resilience, agility and inclusivity will define our collective future. We remain steadfast in our commitment to supporting Ukraine's ongoing recovery and growth, ensuring our solutions and partnerships contribute meaningfully to a stronger, digitally advanced and inclusive economy.
