Empowering SMEs for a digital future
February 20, 2025 | By Dimitrios Dosis
Countries grow, transform and produce wealth in different ways. But when it comes down to driving growth that also boosts community wellbeing and job opportunities, the answer is SMEs. Small and medium enterprises are the lifeblood of economies, driving innovation, employment, and growth.
Across Eastern Europe, the Middle East, and Africa (EEMEA), these businesses are evolving at an unprecedented pace, fueled by digital transformation, financial inclusion, and strategic partnerships. The findings of the Mastercard SME Confidence Index 2025 reveal a clear trend: SMEs that embrace digitalization are more resilient, optimistic, and prepared for the future.
This year’s study highlights how digital payments have become the foundation of SME growth, with high adoption rates in markets such as Nigeria (99%), the UAE (91%), and Kazakhstan (89%). These businesses recognize the value of secure, seamless transactions, with benefits such as faster access to revenues, improved financial management, and enhanced credibility with banks and government institutions. However, challenges persist – from lack of financial literacy in Morocco to economic pressures in Turkey and Kenya – underscoring the need for targeted support and digital enablement.
At Mastercard, we believe in empowering every business - whether it’s a tech-driven startup in Saudi Arabia, a small retailer in Egypt, or an export-focused SME in Kazakhstan. Through strategic partnerships with fintech companies, governments, and banks, we are ensuring that SMEs have access to cutting-edge digital payment solutions, real-time insights, and credit opportunities.
Initiatives such as our collaboration with Safaricom in Kenya, MaxAB in Egypt, and Saudi Awwal Bank in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, demonstrate our commitment to driving financial inclusion and SME wellbeing at scale.
As these small enterprises continue to shape the economic landscape, Mastercard remains dedicated to providing the tools, knowledge, and networks they need to thrive. By fostering a more inclusive, digital-first economy, we are not just supporting SMEs - we are unlocking potential, driving progress, and building a future where every business can succeed.
