Khatija Haque
Chief Economist, Eastern Europe, Middle East and Africa, Mastercard Economics Institute

Khatija Haque is the chief economist for the Eastern Europe, Middle East and Africa (EEMEA) region at Mastercard Economics Institute. Her responsibilities include developing and delivering differentiated economic, financial, policy and macroeconomic thought leadership for Mastercard, its customers and public policy.

Khatija has over 20 years of experience as an emerging markets economist across three continents. Before joining Mastercard, she served as the chief economist and head of research at Emirates NBD. As a founding member of the bank’s research team, she played a key role in developing macroeconomic insights on the GCC and the wider MENA region.

Prior to her move to Dubai, Khatija was an economist at Deutsche Bank in London, focusing on Eastern Europe, Middle East and Africa.

Khatija is renowned for her ability to make complex economic concepts accessible and relevant. Her insights are frequently featured on platforms such as Bloomberg TV and Asharq News as well as in various online and print publications.

Khatija holds a bachelor’s degree in Economics and Finance from the University of Cape Town (UCT).
