What is Agent Pay for Machines (AP4M)?
AP4M (Agent Pay for Machines) is Mastercard's payment infrastructure that enables AI agents to make machine-to-machine payments over HTTP. An AI agent, acting autonomously on behalf of a business or individual, can pay for API access, data feeds, compute resources, or other metered services by presenting a cryptographically signed payment voucher in response to an HTTP 402 Payment Required challenge issued by a merchant server.

The AP4M payment flow eliminates traditional user interaction and payment friction. It removes the need for OAuth redirects, checkout experiences, and manual approval steps. Instead, AI agents operate within pre-authorized spending limits and can autonomously purchase services while adhering to policies and budgets defined by their Agent Principals.
