Cyber-attacks are no longer "if" — they're a "when"

April 2026

Uncover how cyber threats are reshaping the way small and medium businesses operate, invest and grow.

White paper: Cybersecurity through the SME lens

In our latest white paper, Mastercard surveyed over 5,000 SME leaders across six global markets to uncover how cyber threats are reshaping the way small and medium businesses operate, invest, and grow.

For today's small and medium enterprises (SME), cybercrime has become an occupational hazard. Nearly half of SME leaders have already experience an attack at their current business, and that number jumps to 65% when factoring in previous roles. No industry, no region, and no business size is off-limits.

Inside, you'll discover:

  • The new normal: How hacking, phishing, ransomware, and identify theft are hitting SMEs
  • Perception vs. reality: Where SMEs are over or underestimating their risk, and which sector is most attack prone
  • The confidence gap: Why 86% of SMEs have a prevention plan, but only 23% trust it will work
  • Where SMEs turn for help: Who they trust most for cyber advice, tools, and post-attack support
  • What SMEs want next: The tools, price points, and partner qualities driving their decisions, and the barriers holding them back

Why it matters:

SMEs account for 90% of all businesses, 70% of employment, and roughly half of global GDP. Protecting them isn't just good business; it's essential to the health of the global economy.
