Reduce smells

Help people feel comfortable by managing temperature, providing control where possible, and sharing what to expect in advance.

Why this matters

Some people are sensitive to smell. Strong cleaning products, perfumes, or food-preparation smells can make it hard to focus and cause discomfort. They can also make a space unsafe for them to participate in. Reducing smells can be as easy as using unscented cleaning products when the store is closed.

“I wonder if they have to use chlorine-based cleaning products. You can get other cleaning products that just don't have any scents. I have no reaction to them. They're incredible.”

What best practice looks like:

  • Use unscented or low-scent cleaning products
  • Clean outside peak hours when you can
  • Avoid strongly scented air fresheners or candles
  • Ask staff not to wear perfumes or strong deodorants
  • Ensure good ventilation in your space
  • Schedule rubbish removal regularly
  • Be mindful of strong food preparation smells
  • Consider using an air purifier

Example:

A gym switches to unscented cleaning products. They clean early morning before opening.
