Why this matters

Some people are sensitive to visual stimuli and bright or fluorescent lights. This can affect their focus, comfort, and ability to take part. Your business can support them by adjusting your lighting.

“When places have fluorescent lighting...sometimes there are little curtains that go over the top of the fluorescent light which dims the light."

What best practice looks like:

  • Use natural light when possible
  • Replace fluorescents with warm LED lights
  • Add light covers or dimmers over existing fluorescents
  • Remove any flickering lights or bulbs
  • Keep colours and patterns simple
  • Reduce visual clutter and extra decorations
  • Adjust blinds as daylight changes to reduce glare
  • Use lamps if fluorescent lighting is the only option
  • Avoid ceiling fans when possible
  • Lower the brightness on visible screens

Example:

A cafe replaces overhead fluorescents with warm LED pendant lights. They are careful with the location of signs and decor to reduce visual stress.
