Improve store navigation

Make it easier to navigate your space with clear maps and consistent layouts so customers know where to go.

Grocery shop aisles

Why this matters

Help people find their way around by having an online store map showing product sections. This could also include showing what stock is available online.

When people know where things are and what to expect, shopping is more accessible.

“Providing visual previews of actual spaces…I think that's really important.”

What best practice looks like:

  • Publish a store map online showing product categories and locations
  • A sensory map showing stimulating areas (e.g. loudspeakers, fridges, checkouts or scents)
  • Available stock shown online with aisle numbers
  • Wide, clear walkways
  • Consistent store layout, avoiding changes
  • Provide notice in advance of major layout changes
  • Clear signs in the store that match the online map

Example:

A supermarket publishes a store map on its website showing all aisles and departments. It also has a sensory note: “Aisles 1–3 have fridges that can be loud. Checkout scanners beep".
