Consumers today are committed to contribute positively to the world. They are looking for purpose-driven companies to be their “partners in progress.”
Approach
In 2023, Mastercard partnered with Carrefour to introduce its first round-up donation programme in France, aiming to enable over 400 hypermarkets and supermarkets with a round-up solution at the physical point-of-sale. This innovative initiative empowered consumers to donate their spare change to different philanthropic programs, including to the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) or Mastercard´s Priceless Planet Coalition.
When micro-donations (donations between $0.25 and $5) are seamlessly integrated into the consumer shopping experience, they become accessible, affordable, and meaningful, transforming the purchase into opportunities for giving back.
Results
The campaign marked the beginning of Mastercard´s three-year agreement with Carrefour, and it resonated positively with consumers, despite the challenging social landscape in the market in 2023.
Through the 413 technically enabled stores utilizing the Microdon (round-up) solution, over 282,000 trees have been planted globally for the Priceless Planet Coalition (including the french poject in Foret de Chantilly in France), showcasing a significant contribution to environmental sustainability.
Also, the generosity of French customers during the second campaign of 2023 raised funds to deliver the value of almost 2 million school meals to WFP.
