The rise of digital currencies
As more aspects of our lives are becoming virtual, the form and functionality of money is changing too. Digital currencies – a broad category of assets – have been garnering great interest in recent years. But with many competing technologies, value propositions and intended use cases, it is important to understand the differences between these new mechanisms of exchanging value. Central Bank Digital Currencies (CBDCs) – digital fiat currencies issued by central banks, for example – are often discussed in the context of blockchain and cryptocurrency, but the terms are not interchangeable.
