BoxCommerce and Mastercard launch Prepaid Card Program to give SMEs direct, instant access to their earnings
January 19, 2026 | South Africa, Johannesburg
BoxCommerce and Mastercard have collaborated to launch a prepaid Mastercard solution that gives small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) on the BoxCommerce platform fast, secure and direct access to their earnings.
This innovation transforms BoxCommerce from a pure eCommerce enabler into a fintech partner for entrepreneurs, bridging the gap between selling online and accessing digital finance.
In South Africa alone, SMEs account for 91% of formal businesses, provide 60% of employment, and contribute 34% to GDP. Through this collaboration, the ecosystem approach not only strengthens SME access to financial tools but also paves the way for future innovations such as credit solutions, enabled by secure data insights that assess performance and unlock financing opportunities.
The Mastercard-powered prepaid card – available in both virtual and physical form – is fully integrated into the BoxCommerce merchant dashboard. Entrepreneurs can receive payouts instantly, manage their cash flow more effectively and reinvest earnings directly into inventory and operations, all without relying on traditional banking systems.
Craig McLeod, CEO of BoxCommerce, said: “At BoxCommerce, our mission is to go beyond eCommerce by giving entrepreneurs the tools they need to run and grow their businesses. This collaboration with Mastercard allows merchants to receive their earnings instantly and reinvest directly into inventory and operations, helping them scale more efficiently.”
“SMEs are the backbone of our communities, and when SMEs win, everyone wins. At Mastercard, we are committed to supporting small businesses with the technology, insights and trusted partnerships they need to thrive. By embedding Mastercard solutions into platforms like BoxCommerce, we are enabling entrepreneurs to digitize with confidence, access new opportunities, and contribute more fully to inclusive economic growth across Africa.” Mete Guney, Executive Vice President, Market Development, Eastern Europe, Middle East and Africa, Mastercard.
By connecting digital sales with digital financial access, BoxCommerce and Mastercard are attempting to strengthen the backbone of South Africa’s economy and sett the stage for scalable impact across emerging markets.
