The digital payments token service continues to expand globally, eliminating the need to manually update card credentials and increasing the peace of mind when making payments

PARCHIS, NY - June 21 , 2020 - MasterCard today announced the introduction of a digital payment token service for registered consumer card credentials to Amazon customers in 12 countries in North America, Latin America, the Middle East and Europe. This coding technology works by replacing the consumer's primary account number with an alternative card number (or code) for online payment, so that it can only be used by the merchant who requested it. Amazon will start using MasterCard tokens for payment transactions during 2020, with the aim of giving consumers a seamless online shopping experience.

With the boom of e-commerce, more and more consumers are saving their cards and managing their card details across multiple websites. Amazon and many others, including Etsy, Strip and T-Mobile, use MasterCard coding technology to ensure that consumers' registered cards are updated seamlessly. Unlike regular cards, these codes do not expire, so when consumers receive a new standard card from their bank, their credentials are automatically updated, eliminating the hassle of re-entering their card numbers every time.

Digital Payments Coding technology provides the best possible user experience by displaying visual cues and displaying a familiar image of the card that gives the consumer confidence in their preferred payment method. And because MasterCard makes the issuer's art design available to all users, it helps consumers choose their preferred method of payment more efficiently, and increases the likelihood of a successful purchase. According to research by MasterCard and the Kantar Group, 80% of cardholders are more likely to complete a purchase when viewing a picture of their credit card.

The COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated the transition to digital payments, which has reinforced the importance of simplifying the payment experience on e-commerce platforms and making them more convenient than ever. MasterCard's digital enablement service allows for a seamless experience, eliminating the hassle of managing card information and reducing shopping cancellations.

Jorn Lambert, Executive Vice President of Digital Solutions, Mastercard, said : “Mastercard's collaboration with Amazon and other companies is a testament to the strength of our carefully designed suite of digital products, as we provide consumers with the best services that elevate the shopping experience and enhance purchase acceptance rates. The COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated the recent change in consumer behavior patterns, but the key factor behind this is our work to develop the infrastructure and build an ecosystem of fruitful partnerships to serve digitally savvy consumers and forward-thinking companies like Amazon.”

It is worth noting that the digital enablement service is currently in use by more than 2,600 issuers and 1,200 merchants that request card codes in 93 countries, and we continue to work on expanding the spread of digital payment token technology for cards registered in electronic stores, in the context of our continuous efforts to add International companies such as Amazon to adopt this solution on a large scale. Amazon has adopted MasterCard coding technology in the United Arab Emirates, the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Brazil, France, Germany, Italy, Mexico, the Netherlands, Spain and Turkey, and consumers will experience the benefits of this technology when they purchase from Amazon stores in these countries.
