As a MasterCard cardholder, you are not responsible for unauthorized purchases charged to your account. The MasterCard Zero Liability coverage extends to purchases made in a store, over the telephone, or on the Web.How does MasterCard detect fraud?MasterCard operates a state-of-the-art, multi-level fraud monitoring system. The system looks for atypical patterns of activity on accounts and for patterns of activity consistent with fraud. MasterCard can perform digital forensic investigations to determine the source of fraud. MasterCard also works closely with law enforcement and others in the payment industry to battle fraud and criminal activity.Credit Card Fraud is not Identity TheftYour MasterCard card does not contain highly sensitive information, such as social security number, date of birth or similar personal information. If your card is compromised it will not lead to identity theft.What happens if MasterCard suspects a fraud or security attack?MasterCard immediately notifies the financial institutions that issue MasterCard cards, of specific accounts that may have been subject to compromise so they can take appropriate measures to protect your account.MasterCard always takes this precaution regardless of whether there is any indication that fraud has resulted. A card issuer typically will respond through close monitoring of account activity to detect unusual activity and notifying cardholders to confirm recent purchases. MasterCard also notifies law enforcement agencies if there are indications of criminal activity. We work closely with agencies such as the FBI, Secret Service, and state Attorneys General to stop fraud and apprehend the criminals behind the fraud.
