What is MasterCard SecureCode?
MasterCard SecureCode is a program designed to provide online retailers the added security of having issuing banks authenticate their individual cardholders and qualify their online transactions for protection against "cardholder unauthorized" or "I didn't do it" chargebacks.
How does MasterCard SecureCode work?
When a cardholder is on your check-out page, the MasterCard SecureCode service performs the following to ensure that the cardholder is authorized to make this transaction:
| 1 . |
It initiates a pop-up box into which the cardholder enters a private code that is registered with the bank that issued the card.
| 2 . |
It passes the authentication value in your normal authorization request procedures and, if approved, receives an authorization that binds that customer to that transaction. This authentication value is transported using a MasterCard data field, the Universal Cardholder Authentication Field or UCAF.

What steps does an online retailer have to take to support MasterCard SecureCode?
Programming to support SecureCode may already be available to you through your transaction processor. Basically, all an online retailer needs to do is:
| 1 . |
Contact your transaction processor to ensure they support the MasterCard SecureCode program. If they do not, please send an e-mail to: securecodemerchant@mastercard.com.
| 2 . |
Install a SecureCode compliant "plug-in" application on your site.
| 3 . |
Test your site with MasterCard to ensure SecureCode is working properly.
| 4 . |
Display the MasterCard SecureCode logo to let customers know they can be protected.
| 5 . |
Transmit transaction authentication values to the card issuer via your normal authorization process using the Universal Cardholder Authentication Field (UCAF).

What benefits do online retailers receive for adding MasterCard SecureCode support to a website?
There are several benefits that create a very strong business case for your support:
Protection from "cardholder unauthorized" chargebacks for fully compliant transactions. Such protection is designed to reduce your chargeback and processing expenses.
More confident online shoppers. Customers are likely to shop online more frequently and spend more due to the added security of MasterCard SecureCode.
Wider geographic reach by being able to sell to customers in other countries. Not only will you have the added protection against chargebacks for these customers, you will be able to process their Maestro® debit transactions. In many areas of the world, online debit cards are more prevalent than credit cards.
An opportunity to advertise for free on MasterCard's consumer website and attract new customers.
Is MasterCard SecureCode easy for online shoppers to use?
Yes. Cardholders simply need to enter their private SecureCode in a pop-up window or box on their PC before their online transaction can be completed. The safekeeping of this code is not the retailer's responsibility; rather it is managed by the card issuer.
Does MasterCard SecureCode also support Maestro® cards?
Yes. MasterCard SecureCode also provides issuers with a new way of supporting Maestro debit transactions over the Internet, and opens the door to more cross-border transactions with merchants in countries where debit is more established than credit.
