Philippines, April 29, 2009 - MasterCard Worldwide and U21Global today announced that six pioneering Filipinas from the inaugural batch of the MasterCard-U21Global Scholarship Program for Women in Travel and Tourism have successfully completed their post graduate study. Receiving their U21Global Postgraduate Diploma in Business Administration are:
  • Josielyn Torno Manabat-Miranda, El Nido Resorts Direct Sales and Reservation Manager;
  • Arlene Joyce Manubay Lina, El Nido Resorts Marketing and PR Manager;
  • Maria Rosario Rosales Santos, Cebu Pacific Air Director for Airline Quality System;
  • Anna Angeline Santiago Manzano-Cataluna, Cathay Pacific Airways Passenger Sales Executive;
  • Maria Renita Suinan Canafranca, Lagen Island Resort Resident Manager, El Nido; and
  • Marileen Calilong Ayson, El Nido Resorts Direct Sales Supervisor.

The MasterCard-U21Global Scholarship Program for Women in Travel and Tourism aims to empower women professionals to realize their full potential. In its launch in 2006, women from the Philippines already made a mark by bagging the highest number of slots of the 20 full scholarships awarded by MasterCard Worldwide and U21Global. Regarded as part of the next wave of leaders in the country’s travel and tourism industry, the women were selected from numerous accomplished applicants across Asia Pacific.

The Philippine graduates of the MasterCard-U21Global Scholarship Program for Women in Travel and Tourism now have another feather to add to their cap as they completed the online course that focused on diverse aspects of tourism management, which allow for building a broad understanding of management principles and practices relevant to travel and tourism industries. The online program enabled them to pursue graduate studies without leaving their posts.

“Higher education and training are crucial in elevating one’s level of expertise. At U21Global, we take great pride in providing the highest quality of postgraduate education online. I am certain the knowledge gained by our graduates will help them reach their highest potential, exemplifying best practices and world-class industry standards,” said Nick Hutton, CEO, U21Global.

With the end view of developing the skills of the women in the program, a special online learning community was created to give them access to a wide range of speakers and mentors through active web-based communication tools, such as email, real-time chat, threaded discussions and public folders. The curriculum was developed by U21Global and Christel DeHaan Tourism and Travel Research Institute, a part of Nottingham University Business School. Graduates can continue to network with resource persons as well as subsequent scholars and other students even after graduation in the online campus.

For Maria Rosario Santos of Cebu Pacific Air, successfully juggling work and studying was a big challenge that strengthened her discipline and dedication. “The experience gave me a deeper understanding of other work aspects that I wasn’t much exposed to before like marketing, promotions and branding. Now I have a better appreciation of the directions and decisions of management,” she quipped.

Josielyn Manabat-Miranda of El Nido Resorts shared, “Thanks to MasterCard and U21Global, this unique program has helped me develop significantly both personally and professionally. I was able to apply the valuable lessons in my work, especially people management.”

Joy Anne Denoga, El Nido Resorts Director of Sales and Marketing, has leveraged fresher ideas and wider perspectives from Manabat-Miranda, “we need to be on top of our game; in travel and tourism, the fusion of knowledge and creativity is always a plus.”

With the scholarship from MasterCard Worldwide and U21Global, the Philippine graduates have gained dynamic learning experiences and enhanced global knowledge from the intellectual exchanges in the program. They feel better equipped to step up in the workplace and further contribute to the progress of the country’s travel and tourism industry. They all consider the experience as a milestone in their professional and personal lives.

“We recognize that women are a driving force in the advancement of travel and tourism in the region. We encourage our graduates to utilize the knowledge they have gained to become leaders and champions of the industry, and help mentor other women to reach their full potential,” said Georgette Tan, vice president, Communications, Asia/Pacific, Middle East & Africa, MasterCard Worldwide.

Three other women who also completed the program are Magdalene Chia and Nicole Tan from Singapore, and Dolly Bhasin from India.

Now on its fourth year, the MasterCard Worldwide and U21Global scholarship program is a continuing endeavor that advocates woman empowerment through education and the development of the travel and tourism landscape.
