Our relief efforts have included support for the victims of the South Asian tsunami and Hurricane Katrina.
MasterCard has a long history of commitment to disaster relief in response to both domestic and global emergencies.
Following the South Asia tsunami in December 2004, MasterCard waived fees for contributions made by U.S. cardholders to the American Red Cross’s tsunami relief fund. In addition, MasterCard donated its services to work with federal law enforcement and a leading fraud detection company to help prevent internet donation scams related to tsunami relief.
MasterCard responded to Hurricane Katrina with a US$500,000 donation to the American Red Cross, and is double-matching its employee contributions, US$2 for every US$1.
MasterCard also supports the initiatives of American Red Cross chapters, including the International Red Cross/Red Crescent Societies, in the communities where employees live and work.

AmeriCares
MasterCard has been working with AmeriCares for nearly a decade. The company supports AmeriCare’s global emergency relief initiatives by double-matching employee donations to the organization. In response to the South Asia tsunami disaster, MasterCard also waived fees on U.S. cardholder donations to AmeriCares designated for the organization’s tsunami relief fund.
Since 1996 MasterCard employees have participated in the AmeriCares HomeFront project, donating hundreds of volunteer hours to help renovate buildings and camps for underprivileged children. In 2005, our employees helped refurbish the Westchester Exceptional Children’s School (founded in 1969 as a special education day program focusing on the educational, social, and emotional needs of young people aged 5–21 with disabilities), painting and landscaping the school’s campus. And for the last nine years, proceeds from the annual employee golf outing have helped benefit Camp AmeriKids, a summer camp run by AmeriCares for children impacted by HIV/AIDS.
