Retailer and Merchant Resources
If your electronic terminal isn't working you can still accept and process transactions using a manual imprinting machine.
- With the embossed side of the MasterCard card facing up, place the card in the manual imprinter. Place a sales draft on top of the card and pull the handle across both the sales draft and card.
- Fill out the following information on the sales draft:
- Transaction date
- Sales amount in dollars, including any applicable sales tax
- Description of the item or service purchased
- Authorization code - If you are unable to obtain one by phone or Voice Response Unit (VRU), please contact your merchant bank or processor for assistance.
- Verify the sales amount calculated on the sales draft. If you've made an error, let the customer know. You will need to imprint the card onto a new sales draft and fill out the information listed above. Don't forget to tear up the incorrect sales draft in full view of the customer.
- Keep the card in hand and ask the customer to sign the sales draft. Be sure to compare the signature on the sales draft to the signature on the card.
- Once you have confirmed the signatures match, give the MasterCard card and a copy of the sales draft to your customer. Keep your copy of the sales draft for future reference.
