You can use your PassPass on any contactless payment reader that displays this symbol .
Learn How to Tap |
How close does the “tap” have to be to the checkout reader? |
Typically, at the checkout when you tap your card/device must be within an inch or two of the “contactless symbol” on the payment reader on the counter. Do note that if you have more than one PayPass card in your wallet, you should remove the specific card you wish to use to pay.

PayPass Technology
How does it work? |
PayPass uses a hidden embedded computer chip and radio frequency antennae. After you tap your PayPass at checkout, payment details are sent wirelessly to the MasterCard network. Moments after you tap, you will receive payment confirmation and are on your way.* |
What is a key fob or payment tag? |
A key fob or payment tag is a special PayPass device that you can attach to your key chain. Card issuers sometimes provide this as a companion to your traditional, primary, MasterCard plastic card. Usually very small and made of plastic, PayPass fobs/tags contain the same contactless computer chip and radio frequency antennae like regular PayPass cards. But we know that when you are on the go, sometimes it’s just easier to reach for your keys than to pull out your wallet. |
Is there a battery? |
There is no battery used to activate your PayPass. |
Do I need to turn it on/off? |
If you have a PayPass-enabled mobile phone, there are features allowing you to turn it on or off. PayPass cards and fobs are always on and ready to be used. |

PayPass Security
Is it safe? |
Yes. With secure encryption technology and Zero Liability† protection, PayPass is as safe as your regular card.
- You are in control – your PayPass never leaves your hands to make a payment
- No accidental payments – your PayPass must be extremely close to the reader at checkout to work
- Not billed twice – even if you tap more than once at checkout, you’ll only get billed once for your purchase
More About Security |
Why aren’t signatures required? |
To ensure that using PayPass is as simple and convenient as cash, retailers that accept PayPass do not require you to sign for small purchases (under $80). However, for your protection, purchases over $80 generally require a signature or PIN to be used. |
What do I do if my PayPass has been lost or stolen? |
If you have lost your card or suspect unauthorized activity on your account, stop using your PayPass and contact the financial institution that issued your card immediately. If you don’t know your card issuer's number – not a problem – the MasterCard Global Service™ team is available 24/7 to assist you.
