How To Use Your Card Safely & Securely

To help prevent fraudulent use of your card, follow these simple tips:

  • Sign new cards as soon as you receive them.
  • Keep your card account number and personal identification number (PIN) in a confidential place and separate from your cards.
  • Memorise your PIN.
  • Guard your mail from theft. Don't leave mail unattended or unsecured in a mailbox and shred discarded mail that contains personal information.
  • Destroy and dispose of copies of receipts, airline tickets, travel itineraries or anything else that displays your card numbers.
  • Check your cards periodically to make sure none are missing.
  • Don't provide information that you're uncomfortable giving.
  • Never give anyone the password that you use to log on to your online banking account.
  • Don't provide financial account information unless you are paying for a purchase using that account.

  • Pay attention to your credit card bills, ensuring all transactions were made by you.

Password-protect your credit card, bank and phone accounts whenever possible.

  • Note down the Lost Card phone number provided on the back of your card when you first receive it. In the event of losing your card, you will have reference of the number where you should call.
  • Confirm online purchases are secure. Look for clues such as a lock and key at the bottom corner of your browser, a URL that begins https://, or the words Secure Sockets Layer (SSL).
  • Never leave your purse or wallet unattended in open view at any place.
  • Limit the number of credit cards you have and cancel any inactive accounts.

WHAT TO DO IF YOU SUSPECT FRAUD

Call the bank or financial institution that issued your card immediately. Your issuer may want to cancel your current card and issue you with a new one. Check with your issuer to verify that your mailing address has not been changed.

If you still have your card but fraudulent purchases have been made, call your issuer to report the fraud and request a new card.
