WELCOME TO PORTUGAL!

BIENVENUE À L' EURO 2004 TM !

WELCOME to Braga, Guimarães, Porto, Aveiro, Coimbra, Leiria, Lisboa and Faro-Loulé!

These are the words with which Volunteers of UEFA EURO 2004 TM will welcome thousands of people pouring into the country to attend the greatest sports event ever held in Portugal.

From June 12 to July 4, over 4,000 volunteers will be acting as real "ambassadors" of the Portuguese and their proverbial art of hosting their visitors in a dynamic, warm, friendly and cheerful way!

WHAT IS A VOLUNTEER OF UEFA EURO 2004 TM ?

A volunteer, under the Portuguese law, is an individual that in a free, disinterested and responsible way, commits himself to voluntary activities within an organisation, to the extend his own free time and disposition allows him .

(artigo 3º, nº 1 e nº2, da Lei nº 71/98, de 3 de Novembro)

Aware of the importance of volunteerism in major sports events and of the Portuguese regulation on this topic, the EURO 2004 S.A. soon understood that the Volunteer embodies the fair play and disinterested devotion which are expected to characterise the 2004 European Football Championship.

Therefore, during the championship, both hosts and visitors can count on the support and smile of national and foreign volunteers over 15, who have already completed their compulsory education, can speak at least one foreign language and have basic computing skills from the user's point of view.

And as the European Football Championship must reflect unquestionable sportsmanship and highlight healthier habits and practices, Volunteers will not smoke or drink alcohol while on duty.

Being entitled to wear a Volunteer's uniform means fulfilling these conditions and involves much more than that:

...it means that the Volunteer was selected from over seven thousand applicants because he/she showed stronger urge and will;

... it means that the Volunteer went successfully through a selection and training- oriented process to ensure the warmest possible welcome to our visitors;

... it means that the Volunteer shares the same goal and belief in making the best European Championship of all time!

This purpose involves a number of small steps. Therefore, Volunteers can be assigned to such diverse tasks as:

•  Welcoming visitors at the main accesses in Portugal, definite hotel units and host cities;

•  Welcoming visitors at stadiums, assisting them in what regards accesses and parking, hospitality in VIP areas and helping accommodate the public;

•  Escorting visitors and guests, inside and outside the stadiums;

•  Support to different areas of the organisation - media, accreditation, management, usual activities in the stadiums, computing, ticketing, marketing and ceremonies.

Therefore, don't be surprised if a Volunteer welcomes you at the airport, or shows you the way to your place.

As a matter of fact, during the EURO 2004, about 4,500 volunteers will help as Assistants at Media and Fans Information Points, as Sound Technicians, as Photographers' Assistants, as Translators for national teams and Media, as Accreditation Assistants, as Computer Assistant Technicians, as Parking Assistants, as Hosts, Administrative Assistants and Drivers, as Assistants in accommodating the public and controlling Accesses, as Assistants in the EURO 2004 TM ceremonies, as Assistants in Anti-doping controls, as Assistants in Controls of Illegal Activities, etc., etc., etc.

You can easily recognise Volunteers through their light colourful uniforms, accreditation (VOL) and identification badges. Whenever you read «ASK ME – I'M A VOLUNTEER», you'll know you are in presence of someone who is there to give you all the information you need, to show you the way you want, to tell you where your seat is, in a word, someone who is there to give you all the attention you deserve.

Within a few days, the Volunteer will be a familiar presence wherever you can be - at airports, official hotels, stadiums, host cities, training bases, that is, at EURO 2004 TM and ... ALWAYS AT YOUR FINGERTIPS.
