By the Atlantic
Portugal lies southwest of Europe and occupies a small strip of land along the western coast of the Iberian Peninsula. Bordering Spain in the north and the east, it was the Atlantic, the country's natural boundary in the north and the west that would endow it with a unique strategic location, allowing it to be one of the world's greatest maritime nations and a fabulous tourist destination.
History
Born as an independent nation in the 12th century, Portugal, one of Europe 's oldest countries would extend its borders to the Algarve and ensure the defence of the territory conquered from the Moors throughout the Borgonha dynasty. Portugal ventured into the sea and fulfilled its glorious maritime destiny by revealing "new worlds to the world" under the rule of the Avis dynasty. Ruled by Spanish kings for about 60 years, Portugal regained its independence to shape the course of its history in its overseas territories and in Europe.
In 1910, the country became a Republic and joined the list of the world and European democracies in 1974. Some eleven years later, in 1985, Portugal became a member of the EU and has been wending its way in Europe since then. Making the most of its exceptional location and mild climate, Portugal has become a favourite tourist destination for many Europeans and people from all over the world.
Hosting EURO 2004 will be a unique experience for Portugal that will not only offer visitors great sporting moments but also a fantastic stay marked by the beauty of its landscapes, the delights of its gastronomy, the comfort of its tourist infrastructures and the hospitality of the Portuguese people. |
