If visitors are looking for history and art, Aveiro has museums, churches, monuments and public buildings of significant architectural importance that will certainly make their day.


Madre de Deus Chapel
It is a 17th-century building with a dome beautifully decorated with polychrome glazed tiles.

Third Order of St Francis Chapel
It dates to the 17th century and belongs to St. Anthony's Convent.

Misericórdia Church
It was built in the late 16th century and mid-Seventeenth century.

Old Convent of Jesus
It was built between the 15th and 17th century. Princess Joana, daughter of King Afonso V, later Saint Joana, lived in the convent for 18 years. In 1911, the building was restored to house a museum.

Sé (Cathedral)
The church is the only remainder of the old St. Domingos Convent, founded in 1423. The façade is Baroque and the inside exhibits a wide variety of styles.

Saint Anthony's Church and Convent
The convent was founded in 1524 but the church is the only remainder.

Railway Station
The panels of glazed tiles decorating both the exterior and the interior walls beautifully depict some curiosities of the region, the traditional crafts and customs of the Ria.

Jerónimo Pereira Campos plant
The old plant building is now Aveiro's Cultural and Congress Centre.

Fish Market
A beautiful iron structure.

City Hall
This is a simple yet elegant building dating to the 18th century with a façade divided by Tuscan columns. The pediment exhibits Aveiro's coat of arms.

Universidade
When it was founded in 1973 the University centralised all its departments in one single building. Now its campus is a city within the city.
