How safe are contactless payment transactions?
Contactless payments are as safe as traditional payment card purchases, and even more convenient.
Can someone intercept the data or get incorrectly charged for purchases with contactless payment cards/tags/phones?
All MasterCard PayPass® payment cards and phones come with special features to protect against fraud:
- The cardholder/phone owner is in control because the device never leaves their hands
- The device must be extremely close to the payment reader for a purchase to be made
What if the phone gets lost or stolen?
All MasterCard cards issued in Canada are protected with Zero Liability coverage. In the event of loss or theft of your card or PayPass enabled phone, the cardholder should report it immediately to their issuing bank. This notification will prevent future authorization of transactions made against your account. This is the same for all MasterCard payment programs, whether they are enhanced with PayPass or not.
